There is a video clip that has been doing the rounds on the Internet for the last couple of days that has received a lot of coverage, but it is one that we can’t let pass by without comment. The video has been shot on a GoPro by a young surfer named Benji Brand at Skeleton Bay, Namibia and it is by far one of the best point of view barrel videos we have ever seen.
Our track record with a GoPro is pretty appalling, if it isn’t steamed up, or with a big water globule on the lens then the subject matter seems a mile away but Benji has got this little clip just about perfect. Not only is he well and truly in the belly of the barrel for a good 45 seconds, the footage is perfectly clear and captures the spit from the chasing foamball on numerous occasions as it blasts past the lucky Benji as weaves his way along the flawless lefthander.
The actual tube ride is shown twice during the clip, once in slow motion as the perfect barrel winds its way down the sand bottomed point and then again at speed. We have had some debate in the Surf Report office as to whether the wave on the second time round is shown in real time or has been slightly speeded up but it makes no odds, either in slow mo or speeded up, this is one wave, we all unanimously agree we wish we were on!
To cap it off we also get to see just how stoked Benji Brand was with this particular wave as he turns the camera towards the end and his expression is of pure joy. I think if I had scored a tube ride of that quality and length, my smile would have been seen from space! If you haven’t yet seen Benji’s epic ride then the clip can be found below this article, take a look and let us know if you have ever achieved a ride quite like this?
