OK, so this years summer hasn’t been an absolute belter, but it has certainly been warm and the sea temperatures are currently better than average. That said it won’t be long until the first autumn swells arrive and many of you will be searching for new wetsuits and we thought it was our duty to let you know about needessentials, a company delivering premium wetsuits at a fraction of the cost of the major brands.
Founded in 2013, needessentials is headed up by its founder Ryan Scanlon who had previously spent 20 years within the industry designing wetsuits for some of the biggest players in the game. Ryan realised that by eliminating sponsorship, big money ad campaigns and an overkill of branding he could save the end user a significant amount of money. Lets face it, we are all paying a premium to the major wetsuit brands so that a few lucky pro surfers can enjoy endless trips to places we can only dream of and each time we paddle out in wetsuits emblazoned in logos we are providing free advertising for the brand.
I should make it clear at this point that we have no affiliation to needessentials and have never tried the wetsuits, but the concept is something that has really struck a chord. By eliminating all the fluff that goes with advertising and sponsorship, needessentials is able to concentrate on just making quality wetsuits and delivering them at a price that is significantly below that of the big brands. Take for instance the needessentials 5/4 Hooded Chest Zip Steamer which retails at just £187 a comparable suit from a big name brand could easily cost you £300 – £400. This pattern continues across the full range of need essentials wetsuits
So what about the quality I hear you ask? Well, the suits have everything you would expect from a premium wetsuit including glued, blind stitched and fully taped seams, fleece lined back and kidney panels and premium 4 way stretch neoprene. It seems that you get everything you have come to expect from a modern day wetsuit, with a decent price saving. Take a look at the embedded images and I bet they don’t look a lot different from your own big brand wetsuit?
I have no idea if the suits are as good as any of the others on the market but with a healthy saving to be made I am more than prepared to take a gamble next I am in the market for a new one.
