As promised the swell arrived for the first leg of the Big Wave World Tour in Punta Galea this morning and as hoped the big wave surfers stepped up to the mark and put on quite a show. The surf was hitting around 30 feet and the competition was packed with “heart in mouth” moments, including heavy wipeouts, broken boards and an incredible recovery by the eventual winner Nic Lamb.
If any of you managed to see any of the live feed, you will know that conditions weren’t perfect, there was a fearsome rip and the wave had a bit of chop to the face, but this didn’t deter the brave wave riders who headed out there. In fact the competition saw 2 riders post up a perfect 10 score, the first by local boy Natxo Gonzalez and the second by Nic Lamb for an astonishing recovery after ending up virtually laid flat out in the foam, with about 30 foot of boiling whitewater bearing down on him.
We have attached 2 videos below this article, the first showing Nic Lamb’s heart stopping ride and the second is a collection of wipeouts from todays big wave event. What a fantastic opener to the Big Wave World Tour Northern Hemisphere and we can’t wait for the swell to bring Todos Santos and Pe’ahi to life, for the next round of XXL action! Let us know what you think of Nic’s recovery and if you managed to watch the event today? Nic just nudged tour leader Makua Rothman into second place with Nathan Fletcher taking the third spot.
