With Surf Snowdonia opening in just over a week and the prospect of guaranteed waves all year round now a reality for UK surfers, Wavegarden have just upped the anti after running a night surfing experiment at it’s flagship lagoon in Northern Spain. By adding a state of the art lighting system underneath the waves, the boffins at Wavegarden have not only created a stunning visual display but have also opened up the prospect of being able to surf 24/7 and 365 days a year!
Even with an inland surfing lagoon at your disposal, many of us will still have the constraints of work, school and family life that will restrict our ability to get wet, but imagine the options an illuminated Wavegarden will offer. You will be able to help put the kids to bed and then sneak off for a wave in the dark, or on the way home after a night shift, and will be able to surf beyond 4pm in the middle of a British winter!
Night surfing has been done before, but the waves have always been lit from above or from the side and this always casts shadows and it is hard to read the wall of the wave. The Wavegarden idea of lighting from below allows the surfer to easily read the wave and combined with the perfect mechanics of the manmade wave, the whole experience becomes intuitive as well as looking pretty spectacular.
The official Wavegarden video and press release of the first illuminated night surf testing can be seen below, let us know if you like the idea of being able to surf anytime day or night to fit in with your own schedule and have you ever surfed at night before?
