We recently reported that the beach of Llandudno in Cape town South Africa was to play host to the Nixon Weird Contest, a truly one off event where the competing surfers get to battle on some mighty strange boards. The event was a huge success and the crown was taken by Michael February, who was riding a board called The Anaconda that was shaped by David Stubbs.
The clip below shows some of the highlights from the event and features the skilful Mr February showing exactly why he deserved to take the title. Filmed and edited by Tao Farren-Hefer and mixed with the dulcet tones of Jake Bugg and his track Lightning Bolt.
The event looks like it is a real blast and everyone who gets involved seems to give it their all and it becomes a real family occasion. Hopefully this is a template that will be adopted at a beach near us soon as we like the idea of a fun competition that is also a little wacky. Although the boards are certainly not “standard” we would love to see the shapers getting even more radical with their ideas and creating something that really breaks the mould.
