UK news bulletins over the last year have featured a lot of coverage on the exploration and drilling for Shale Gas, and as much as it has some major down points, at least it doesn’t threaten the waves that so many of us enjoy. The Surfers and Bodyboarders of The Canaries aren’t quite so lucky, as the Spanish Government has approved the drilling for oil just under 20km from the beaches of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and the Islanders and water users are fighting hard to halt the works.
Permission has been granted for the work to get underway in the next month and the Canary Island Surfers, Bodyboarders and residents need help to try to block the drilling by energy company Repsol. Concerns about oil spills and damage to the local tourism trade, beaches and flora, fauna and wildlife are driving the campaign and an online petition has been launched to try and stop proceedings.
The petition currently has over 212 000 signatures from all corners of the globe, to throw your weight behind this campaign and sign the petition head to the Save Canaries webpage. The campaign has support from dozens of activists including Greenpeace, WWF and the Clean Ocean Project and a Canary Island Bodyboard shop called KLAK have put together a video to show exactly what the Islands have on offer and how much they stand to loose.
The video can be seen below, let us know if you will be signing the petition and if you have enjoyed surfing in The Canaries before?
