O’Neill have been at the forefront of surf clothing development since Jack O’Neill started making and selling wetsuits back in the 1950’s to stave off the cold water at the local surf spots of San Francisco. Since those early days, O’Neill as a company have continued to innovate and develop surf clothing and equipment, and their latest range of clothing is no different. The O’Neill Blue Collection is a range of surfwear that is made from recycled plastic that has been washed up and collected from the sea and beaches.
The O’Neill Blue Spring/Summer Collection includes sweatshirts, walk shorts, T-Shirt’s and boardshorts, which have been created from around 200 thousand items of beach plastic that has been collected from beaches around the world. A pretty impressive statistic, but when you think it is said there are around 8 million tons of plastic waste in the sea, you realise it truly is a ‘drop in the ocean’.
It is commendable of O’Neill to be trying to make a difference and looking for a way to produce surf clothing that makes a difference and helps to remove some of the plastic from the world’s seas, and we can only hope that the other major surf companies will follow suit. At present the O’Neill Blue collection seems limited to just a mens range, but it surely can’t be long until they roll out women and children’s clothing made from recycled beach plastic. You can see the current range here, feel free to let us know what you think of the O’Neill Blue Collection and would you be happy to wear clothes that help get plastic out of our oceans?
