We regularly feature news stories of surfers and paddleboarders, who just happen to be in the right place and the right time and experience wonderful shared moments with marine life. We have previously reported on shark, whale and dolphin encounters but today it is Humpback Whales that steal the headline. A group of paddleboarders and kayakers were lucky enough to see the pod of Humpbacks feeding at Avila Beach, California.
The whales make the journey up to the waters off of Central California each year to feast on the plentiful supplies of krill and to build up their fat stores to see them through the winter months. This particular pod of Humpback Whales were feeding alongside the Avila Beach Pier, which is a well known whale watching hotspot.
The lucky group of paddlers were captured alongside the whales with a drone and it must have been a heart stopping moment when the Humpbacks surfaced and expelled the huge fountains of spray from their blowholes. The Vector Life video of the SUP and Humpback Whale encounter can be seen below. Have you ever paddled alongside whales or dolphins?
