The O’Neill Unreasonable film festival is currently well underway, and festival organisers have asked 6 proven and accomplished filmmakers to re-imagine the modern surf film and to conjure up some original and creative new films. The artists have certainly ticked all the boxes and the result has been some inventive and visionary films, but is the psychedelic fourth entry called Waveform, directed by Stefan Nadelman that has really caught our eye.
Being children of the 70’s, Stefan’s Waveform film reminds us very much of a Christmas morning, gazing down the barrel of a freshly opened kaleidoscope whilst in the throws of a heady sugar rush! Waveform features the talents of Malia Manuel, Mark Matthews and Jordy Smith but it is the techniques used by Stefan that make this short movie such a pleasure to watch. Using mirroring and waveform editing techniques with a touch of colour tweaking, the 3 minute clip is refreshing and moves forward with a relaxed fluidity.
The Unreasonable Festival culminates on the July 30th and the first four entries can be seen in full at the O’Neill website here. We have embedded Waveform below this article, so strap in and enjoy the funky, trippy clip and let us know if it is “your bag” or did you find it all a little bit too weird?
