News is beginning to filter in that The Quest 1, the boat that better known as The Rip Curl Search Boat has sunken whilst on a charter trip in The Mentawais. Details are somewhat sketchy, but it seems Quest 1 developed a leak in the engine room and sunk in the early hours of the morning, but luckily all the crew and paying guests made it off the boat safely and were found by other charter boats in the area a few hours later.
The Quest 1 has been on the scene for a few years now and has ferried many of the best surfers in the world on journeys of discovery, as they have “Lived The Search” on the Rip Curl sponsored boat. The more cynical amongst you may think that Rip Curl, seeing the amount of attention that the Mick Fanning shark encounter has received, may have jumped on the media bandwagon, but it appears to be just an unfortunate incident in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Full details can be seen at Surfing Life, who have managed to speak with Pete Nevins, one of the guests on the Quest 1 at the time and who gives a detailed account of the sinking and also managed to capture some of the chaos on his GoPro. Have you ever run into trouble on a surf charter trip and are you hoping to see Rip Curl continue The Search and maybe commission Quest 2?
