Unless you have been on another planet this last week, you will know that Europe saw a gigantic swell grace it’s Atlantic facing shores and some of the biggest waves in living memory were seen at some beaches. One place in particular grabbed most of the headlines and that was the beach of Praia do Norte, in Nazare Portugal, where the Red Bull team were hoping to ride the biggest wave ever.
Although the record wasn’t broken, the team surfed some absolute beasts, waves the size of mountains and there were plenty of other incidents to keep the baying crowd happy. Driverless skis, broken boards and Benjamin Sanchis took a beating that left me cold when I saw it and is one of the biggest piles of whitewater I have ever seen land on anyone.
The Red Bull Nazare video can be seen beneath this post, but please be aware that Andrew Cotton opens the clip with a touch of potty mouth! Not the best of quality videos but certainly good enough to give you some idea of the ferocity of the swell the Red Bull team tackled last week. Reckon you could do it? Let’s hope Red Bull give’s you lungs not wings!
