You may consider that flat water SUP racing lacks a bit of excitement, I mean racing flat out around a set course isn’t really one for the spectators and even as a competitor there isn’t much to do other than putting your head down and digging in, so when we heard that Red Bull were hosting a Stand Up Paddleboard race, we knew they would break the mould. The Red Bull Water Maze, is a unique event that combines flat water SUP racing with an orienteering format to test stamina, speed, strategy and decision making.
The first Red Bull Water Maze will play out over 8km of waterways at Runaway Bay in Queensland, Australia on September 26 2015 and features six different competitive divisions. Whilst fitness and paddling skills will obviously help, the course map will only be unveiled moments before the start of the race, meaning that there can be no home advantage and everyone has to figure out their own route through 6 checkpoints on the course.
The event is open to anyone over the age of 16 and there are a total of 250 places available ($30 entry fee), with all competitors racing simultaneously. Anyone interested in taking part in the Red Bull Water Maze should take a look at the official Surfing Queensland website here. Do you like the fact that Red Bull are making SUP racing a little bit more exciting and would dyou like to see these events roll out near you?
