We think nothing of swapping fins about on our Surfboards, experimenting with different amounts of flex, size and various set up configurations, well now a new design of board will mean that you can experiment just as much with the tail of your board. The Shapeshifter Surfboard has a detachable tailpiece that can be quickly and easily removed and swapped for a new one from a choice of six.
It’s amazing that this idea has never been thought of before, it is so incredibly simple and will add a whole new dimension to the humble Surfboard. One board can now be set up, one minute as swallow tail for tackling smaller waves and then switch it to a pin tail for sliding into a few freight train whoppers! There is even the option of an Asymmetrical tail, to allow for a different type of riding either on your frontside or backhand. Board choice for Surf travel just became a whole lot easier, it may be possible in the future to cut down on the amount of boards you travel with.
This new design by David Barr is surely going to take the Surfing world by storm and could be as important as the shift to fin boxes from the glassed on fins of old. There already seems to be a lot of interest in the idea as the Shapeshifter website is currently reporting they are overwhelmed and not able to answer questions personally. There is no hint on the price of the Shapeshifter boards and when they are expected to be available but luckily there is a video that shows the revolutionary idea in practice.
The short clip is included below and will give you an idea of the six designs of tail that will be available and you will notice how simple but perfect this idea is. Please let us know what your thoughts are on the Shapeshifter Surfboard and do you think this is the start of a new era for Surfing?
