There is currently $50 000 at stake for the Surfer with the biggest cojones and who manages to surf the biggest wave of 2014, courtesy of the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave award. With what has been an unprecedented start to the year there are already many contenders in the frame, Andrew Cotton at Nazare, Grant Baker at Mavericks or maybe Jamie Mitchell at Jaws? With big waves also comes the risk of big wipeouts and luckily for the poor unfortunate soul who gets the harshest rinsing Billabong are also offering an award for them too!
One of the early contenders for this glitzy prize, is Wade Goodall who has been captured on film getting the wipeout from hell at Shipsterns Bluff in Tasmania. At first things look to be going quite well for Wade as the ski launches him headlong into the belly of a beast and he drops in quite casually giving it a bit of Charlie big spuds. Unfortunately in true Devil Point style the wave warps and a step forms right in front of Wade, he manages to air drop off the step but looses speed, has a wobble and by then it’s to late
Like a collapsing building behind him and with probably about the same amount of force, the wave chops into the top of Wade’s spine and drives him down into the granite reef below. We can only guess as to kind of rag-dolling poor Wade must have endured.
On the plus side though, Wade is now in with a chance for the XXL Wipeout of the Year award and we get to replay his beating over and over again! And with 2014 only two months old, you can bet your house that there will be a few more hidings to savour before the year is out!
