It would be fair to say that 2015 isn’t shaping up to be one of Stephanie Gilmore’s best, the fractured fibula she picked up in Western Australia back in April is continuing to plague her and severely denting her chances of taking a 7th world title in 2015. Hopefully then, she will be lifted by the news today that the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association has named her as the 2015 Waterman of The Year.
SIMA President Doug Palladini announced the news, saying, “Not only is she a fierce competitor and gifted athlete in the water, but she’s also a great representative for surfing culture at large and an excellent role model. Steph is always smiling, showing compassion, and inspiring those around her. It’s a tremendous honor for SIMA to present Stephanie Gilmore with the 2015 Waterman of the Year award.”
The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association was founded in 1989 as a non-profit organization to promote awareness of the surf industry and represents over 300 surf suppliers as well as supporting oceanic environmental efforts. This year will witness the 26th Annual Waterman’s weekend, which will be held at the Ritz Carlton at Dana Point over the weekend of August the 14th and 15th. Accompanying the award of the Waterman of The Year accolade there will also be the Waterman’s Classic Golf Tournament and Waterman’s Ball and Auction. The organizers will be hoping to beat the $400 000 they raised last year to help 20 ocean conservation groups.
