An interesting video has shown up here in the Surf-Report office today, of a guy on his Stand Up Paddleboard – sitting down! Not just sitting on the board and maybe taking a break or just relaxing, but on a purpose built seat attached to the deck. Doesn’t that just defeat the object?
Whilst this isn’t the first time we have seen similar designs, we wonder if it maybe contradicts the design? Surely the clue is in the title? They are not called Sit Down Paddleboards after all! However, we can see that there would be some advantages to this and we are not critiscising the idea, for example it would be great for the elderly or infirm to enable them to get out and gently enjoy the sport.
We can also see benefits to endurance paddlers, giving them the option to take the weight off for a while, (speaking from experience), a long distant paddle can be quite stressful on the feet and legs. We also wonder if this idea may be beneficial to Paddlers who also like to fish? They could paddle out to a favourite spot and then sit back and reap their rewards in comfort.
But, one of the main benefits of Paddleboarding is the fantastic workout out it gives the bodies core and we question whether this will still happen and wonder if the lower back might face extra stress?
We would love to hear your thoughts on this design, Do you think it could catch on or have you tried a similar product? Let us know how you found it.
