If you had a new Ski suit to promote, the ad campaign you would be likely to run with would involve perfect off piste powder and a glorious mountain backdrop? If you really wanted to make an impact you could give your Ski suit to a seriously skilled if not slightly mad Skier and then tow them into some double overhead waves to Ski Surf at Jaws!
That is exactly what the Willy Bogner of the sportswear and fashion company Bogner has done. In a bid to promote the new Ski suit and create something that makes the world sit up and take notice, Willy has enrolled Californian Chuck Patterson to get kitted up and head out to Ski down the famous Hawaiian wave.
What follows is a display of pure skill that amazes, but also baffles. It is hard not to be impressed as Chuck digs his Skis into the wave face and individually controls each Ski to carve and hold position on the big waves. It definitely gets a little weird when he then starts digging his poles into the swell, trying to force some extra speed.
Whether this is a sport to catch on remains a mystery, we can definitely see potential in the idea and would love to see it progress to the point the participants are busting big moves in smaller steeper surf. Imagine an Iron Cross Floater! We do however have concerns as to the injuries that could be sustained to the knees whilst having the Skis attached in a bad slam!
You can see the video of Chuck Patterson Skiing at Jaws below, take a look and let us know what you think. We have also attached a second clip of Chuck in action from a few years back, showing this was not a one off for the ad campaign. A sport with potential or a clever marketing gimmick and an idea to ridiculous to contemplate?
