The latest episode of Fergal Smith’s Growing series has been released by Line9, and this time round we see Ferg catch up with an old childhood pal who is a master craftsman and see Fergal paddle out to tackle a stormy slab break.
Episode 6 of the Growing series has been aptly named Spoons, and the reason why becomes apparent as soon as Fergal catches up with his lifelong friend Eamon O’Sullivan. It turns out that Eamon is a “Whittler” or more professionally known as a Green Wood Worker, and he demonstrates some very traditional skills and tools as he crafts beautiful wooden spoons.
Eamon also explains the delights of eating with and using wooden utensils, due to the lightness and warmth of the wood. Not only is he an expert craftsman, it turns out he is a demon Saxophone player as the next minute he is gives us an impromptu and sultry version of Dave Brubeck’s, Take Five!
No episode of Growing would be complete without Fergal getting wet somewhere and enjoying some Irish delights and this time we see him head out in some stormy, but still very rideable conditions. As usual Fergal makes it look all very easy and has the place dialled as he picks of some lovely looking waves to round the day off with.
So far this series we have seen pigs, wooden spoons, vegetables and injury comparisons and we are already left pining for episode 7. There are a lot of Surfers who seem to have life just about perfect and are the envy of others the world over, but for me it is Fergal Smith who has it just about right. An idyllic life, on an idyllic isle and with idyllic waves on tap. Fergal Smith’s Growing, is certainly Growing on me.
