We have previously covered SUP football (FootSUP) and SUP snowboarding, but today we bring you news of a new variation in the sport of Paddleboarding. SUP Polo is the latest offshoot to the the sport and is being promoted and introduced by Starboard in a collaboration with WholyPaddle, who have created an inflatable pitch complete with inflatable goals and extra strong SUP paddles.
A new paddleboard to compliment the sport has also been made, called the Astro SUP Polo, the 9’5″ x 36″ is the perfect board for making rapid turns and is highly manoeuvrable in the tightest of situations. The Astro SUP Polo is plenty wide enough to allow you to concentrate more on the game than your balance and is fitted with white water fins on the nose and tail, meaning it can be ridden switch and in both directions.
Because the specialist SUP Polo Paddle not only has to be used to propel yourself around the pitch, but is also used to lob and catch the ball, they are a lot stronger than conventional paddles and feature a centre hole to allow easy scooping of the ball, with out throwing water all over your opponents.
As well as the specialist equipment, a set of rules have also been introduced, such as 3 people per a team, no handling the ball when in the water or on your knees and the game is played over 5 minute halves. The official Starboard video embedded below shows the game is extremely high tempo and certainly looks like a lot of fun for all involved.
