As if the lucky surfers in and around the city of Melbourne haven’t got enough surf spots within driving distance, plans have just been floated to build a wave pool in the Docklands area. The floating beach would be built within the shade of the skyscrapers and within walking distance of the Spencer Street station.
The $8 million project will see a man made beach, a retail area and a decking area that would overlook the 160 meter wave that will be adjustable to suit beginners and pros alike. The engineering firm Arup and architect Damian Rogers are behind the Surf Park Docklands idea, although there is still a long way to go, as the project is still within the planning stage and will still need to seek approval and backing from Melbourne’s officials.
The idea of sneaking out of work for a quick Surf during lunch breaks or popping in after work is definitely appealing, and it will be amusing to think of wetsuit clad Surfers mingling with business suit clad office workers. Do you think Melbourne really needs an inland surf destination and would you like to see a wave pool in your city?
