As much as Christmas is the best time of the year, it can also be extremely stressful trying to track down the right present, especially if your loved one is a Surfer. To try and help out a little we have been taking a look at some of the present ideas out there, some are things we would love to receive ourselves and other ideas are things we have reviewed over the last year. This may be especially helpful for anyone who isn’t into Surfing themselves.
We will start with a few stocking filler ideas and the first thing every surfer needs is Wax. There are many different brands out there on the market and it is very important to make sure you buy the correct wax for the temperature of water your loved one will be immersing themselves in. Some of the brands we can recommend and put our trust in are Mr Zog’s Sex Wax, Sticky Bumps and one we looked at earlier this year – Matunas. One of the most inexpensive but most important items any Surfer could want for, Surf Wax is available at any Surf store or online.
Other stocking filler present ideas include ear plugs, changing robes, ding repair kits, car key locking pods, Surf books and Surf DVD’s and every Surfer will always appreciate a framed photo of themselves (we are all wannabe Kelly Slater’s after all!)
Any self respecting Surfer needs to make sure they remember important dates in their lives, such as the start of the 2015 World Tour or the start of Summer, so a calendar is always a safe bet. There is a calendar to suit everyone somewhere out there and just last week we took a look at some of our favourites. Whether surfing dogs or pounding beach breaks is what floats your loved ones boat, there is a calendar out there for them and makes a nice inexpensive gift.
One thing all UK Surfers would appreciate following a cold winter surf is a nice warm hoodie or bobble hat to throw on following a near sub zero session, these are available at all Surf shops and some good deals can also be found by searching online. A mid priced gift for someone who not only Surfs, but maybe paddleboards, swims or bodyboards and is sure to be appreciated is a waterproof MP3/Phone case. One we took a look at back in July was the Aquapac 518 MP3 Case. This case, paired with the Aquapac waterproof headphones allows the user to take their phone or MP3 device out in the ocean with them and enjoy their choice of music in the water whilst leaving the phone fully functional too.
If you are looking for a gift that pushes the boat out a little or one for the Surfer who is fully kitted out with all the necessary equipment, then a watch might be a good choice of present. Two watches that have hit this market this year spring to mind. Firstly the Rip Curl Search GPS watch is one that has been grabbing a lot of headlines. For about £239 the Search GPS allows the user to record and track all the information from each surf session, including speed and distance travelled whilst out on the waves. All the information can be downloaded and analysed and compared to previous sessions or against friend’s stats.
Another watch we give full backing to is the Elliot Brown Bloxworth watch. Our Editor in Chief has been singing the praises of this rugged and robust sports watch since reviewing it earlier in the year. The Bloxworth is a watch that not only shrugs of all the abuse you can throw at it, it then goes on to look stunning in the pub during the après surf wind down. See our in depth review here.
For the Surfer who really does have everything or for the ultimate one off and truly unique Surfer related Christmas present then what could be better than giving your loved one the opportunity to hand craft their very own Surfboard. Otter Surfboards in Porthtowan, Cornwall, offer the chance to visit their workshops and over the course of a week, give you the necessary skills to create your very own, hand made wooden Surfboard. Whilst this is the most expensive present we are suggesting today (at around £1500) this is by far the biggest gift we think you could bestow on your loved one. A present that will not only help to build new skills, make new friends but will leave them with a truly one off Surfboard at the end of the experience too.
This list is by no means definitive, so please feel free to comment below if you have received or want a gift that others would also appreciate. Hopefully this is of some use and will take a little bit of stress out of the Christmas shopping and mean more time in the water or with family and friends. We would also like to take this opportunity to wish a Merry Christmas to all our Surf Report followers.
