Three things that we have found always grab a lot of attention are big waves, big Jaws and big wipeouts so when we saw one of the latest entries to the Billabong XXL Wipeout of the Year, we knew we had to feature it. The video below features all of the above and not only does the brave soldier tackling the beast take a hit, one of the support boats in the foreground also gets nailed by the previous wave.
The incident occurred on March 2nd at Jaws, Peahi, on the Island of Maui and the surfer who gets clipped is Koa Rothman, details about the boat captain remain elusive! Almost in perfect unison the boat and Koa get taken out at the same time in what we consider to be one of the best double wipeouts we have ever seen.
Koa drops in perfectly well and is setting his sights firmly on his exit to the shoulder when the lip pitches and drops directly behind him before engulfing him in a torrent of white water. The fishing boat for reasons unknown to us, is sitting right on the inside, mixing it where only skis should dare and as the churning wall of white water approaches the captain turns his back on the mush but can’t find the speed to get away. Maybe the better option would have been to tackle the foaming wall head on?
There have been no reports of any injuries following this bizarre double wipeout and we hope the boats occupants survived with no more than bruised pride. Take a look at the surreal double wipeout below and let us know your thoughts on this combo beating.
