Wave riding in all its many forms is like a drug, those who participate in any water sport need a regular fix and will keep coming back for more even after a particularly hard wipeout. This is no better demonstrated than in Fergal Smith’s latest episode of his video series Growing, which features some seriously heavy beatings, recounted by Fergal and his crew in an unbelievably casual manner, but even those poundings aren’t enough to stop the boys coming back for more!
Now at some stage or other we have all encountered a hard wipeout that has knocked the wind out of our sails, maybe drawn blood or worse broke a bone, but out in Ireland the law of averages seems to suggest that every second surfer can expect a hospital visit on every other surf! Whilst tending the land at the Moy Hill Community Garden, the gang nonchalantly trade stories and injuries in what must be one of the most exclusive boys clubs in the world.
The video below shows a collection of some of the heaviest wipeouts you are likely to see and the Irish slabs and thick-lipped waves are pretty unforgiving, as you will find out as the clip progresses.
If you haven’t been following Fergal’s Growing series and life in County Mayo with Holly the Pig, you really have been missing out, but you can catch up and subscribe to receive further episodes at Line9 on YouTube. For us stuck in the rat race and with worse than average waves at our disposal Fergal’s videos are a breath of fresh air and a chance to lose yourself in his idyllic world for just a few minutes. Take a moment to both enjoy and flinch at the video below and let us know the worst injury you have suffered whilst wave riding?
