Some worrying news has emerged this week via Surfers Against Sewage, as to exactly the kind of waste and rubbish that is appearing on some of our UK beaches, not only is it the amount of rubbish that is concerning, it is the age of the stuff. Some of the garbage that has been found in our coastal waters is actually over 50 years old.
The environmental charity group SAS has reported this week exactly what has been turning up at their community beach cleans and you will be shocked to discover that the decades old rubbish is being found in near mint condition. This is particularly worrying, as if we are finding waste in our oceans that is in perfect condition from the 1960’s it gives us an idea how long the rubbish still being discarded today will be floating around for.
Some of the litter that has been found on the UK beaches includes a yoghurt pot from the 1970’s, 1960’s crisp packets and even sweet wrappers dating back to the 1980’s. Other more bizarre items found, include a set of dentures in Southend, a plastic chicken at Perranporth and worryingly a fridge at Cruden Bay near Aberdeen.

Please feel free to let Surf Report know of any weird or unusual waste you have ever found at you local beach, the most obscure we can think we have ever found was an old LP that would have taken decades to biodegrade.
