The Surfers and beach users of East Sussex are appealing for help from the wider community to help save the beach of Tidemills from proposed development. The owners of the nearby Newhaven Port are looking to expand their current operations and have set their eyes on the nearby Tidemills Beach, which if the works go ahead will destroy a popular surf break and tourist beach.
The developers are Newhaven Port and Properties, who have already closed off access to Newhaven West Beach, leading to bitter disputes with the local community for some time now. To try and save this popular surfing and tourist beach, a petition has been raised by Save Our Wave and you are asked to help fight to save Tidemills Beach.
Although there is an understanding that development of the Port would be good for the local community and economy, nobody wants to lose access to another local beach and at the detriment of Tidemills beach. Decent South Coast surf spots are few and far between, we don’t want to lose anymore! The beach of Tidemills, at Seaford offers some protection to South Coast surfers in harsh conditions because of the existing harbour arm and can be one of the best surfing spots in the area.
The deadline for raising objections against the planning proposal is March the 4th and you are urged to throw your weight behind the surfers and locals of Newhaven and sign a petition against the planned developments here. Have you ever surfed at Tidemills Beach and do you think the locals stand a chance of halting the Port development?
