Now that the fuss has died down from the Mavericks Invitational and the watching eyes of the Surf fraternity turn to other spots such as Jaws, Nazare and Belharra, we wondered what other wave riding craft get out at Half Moon Bay. It turns out, that although others try, they don’t seem to have the same success and finesse of the Surfers on their Big Guns.
We have been having a trawl through the web and have found a couple of clips that may explain why you don’t see the video streams and mags crammed full of images of Boogers and Paddleboarders dominating the break
In the first video, you will see a disastrous attempt by a brave but questionably mad Paddleboarder who tries to tame Mavs. In what is a gallant effort and there is no denying he caught the wave, it leads to what can only be described as the wipeout from hell. Nearly annihilating a surfer on the way down, the rag dolling he must have gone through is spine chilling!
Secondly we see some old footage of a Bodyboarder taking the drop, and although he makes it further that the chap on the SUP, it still feels like a hiding to nothing. Hitting chop as he heads shoreward he gets chucked about like a toy and leaves the water completely as he struggles to dig a rail.
There are definitely some spots around the world that are better left to just one group of wave riders and Mavericks is one best left to the Surfers.
