Last week Orange County was hit by a lovely swell that lit up spots the length of the coastline and one in particular that came alive and attracted riders of all craft was The Wedge at Newport Beach. Although the majority of the waves that break here amount to a close out onto the sand, it doesn’t deter the hoards of hellmen and thrill seekers who flock there each time it breaks and throw themselves at the mercy of The Wedge.
Luckily for us the mayhem that followed was captured on video by Andrew Johnson and shows the different boards being ridden and the many beatings that went down during this session. People took to the water on Stand Up Paddleboards, Surfboards and Bodyboards, but it mattered not what you were riding, very few managed to ride out to a clean exit!
Although we have featured The Wedge a few times, it is a place that holds a fascination for most wave riders and everyone likes to see a few mishaps and wipeouts so we have included the video below this article. Hats off to all the people featured in the clip as it was a big swell and there was a lot of water moving around on this particular day. Just paddling out there takes a fair amount of courage, let alone chucking yourself head first down one of these mutant wedges! Enjoy the clip and let us know if you have ever Surfed at The Newport Wedge and if you like to see all these different boards being ridden in harmonic chaos?
