With so much attention given to modern day big wave spots like Nazare, Jaws and Mavericks, it sometimes seems like the grand daddy of them all, Waimea Bay gets a little bit overlooked. Waimea was first surfed in the late 50’s and remained very much at the forefront of big wave surfing into the 1980’s, before a desire to hunt down other massive waves and the arrival of tow surfing diverted attention elsewhere. Although Waimea does recapture imaginations when the Eddie Aikau Memorial gets called on, these occasions are few and far between, so it is therefore quite refreshing to see a new video of Waimea doing what it does best and a group of dedicated big wave surfers giving it their all.
Starring Chris Owens, Mason Barnes, Luke Shepardson Landon McNamara, Matt Bender and Sebastian Correa, the 3 minute video features a glorious mix of heavy wipeouts, brave surfing and plenty of scratching over the top as the huge waves surge into the bay. Enjoy Waimea Maxing Out from Sam Sykes below.
