Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and as I sit here, off work, nursing a dislocated shoulder that happened during a recent surf trip, I am left thinking that having a personal accident cover that paid out following surfing accidents would have been a good thing. It is typical that only now, following my accident, it has been announced that Surfing GB membership now includes personal accident cover, and both membership and insurance are included for a £20 yearly subscription fee.
By joining up to Surfing GB you automatically receive Personal Accident Cover and 3rd Party Liability insurance (up to £5 000 000), should your actions cause injury or damage to someone or their property. The cover is valid worldwide and covers you when riding longboards, short boards, Paddleboards and Bodyboards.
Whilst we all consider ourselves excellent watermen and women, accidents do happen and quite often through no fault of our own. Last year I was struck in the head at my local break, when a so called mate let his board go as I was paddling out and I received a gash to the head! This insurance not only offers you the financial protection should you have an accident caused by a third party, but also means you can surf safe in the knowledge, that should you inadvertently cause an injury or damage to someone else, you will also be covered for any financial liability.
As well as the excellent value insurance your £20 will also get your Surfing GB membership, which includes member only discounts and deals, access to SGB information, support and resources, the right to enter SGB events and if you are a member of a local surf club that is affiliated to Surfing GB, you can nominate them to receive a cash back of 25% of your subscription fee.
So all in all it is a no brainer really. Many travel insurance companies don’t cover Surfing unless you pay a premium to include it additionally and even then they quite often make it hard to claim. Surfing GB have negotiated the insurance cover with Endsleigh Insurers and it is purposely geared to cover our favourite pastimes.
