It still seems a million miles away, but Surfing has moved a step nearer to being a part of the 2020 Olympic Games, with the announcement today that Tokyo have recommend our sport to be included when the games head to Japan in five years time. Karate, baseball/softball, sport climbing and skateboarding have also been shortlisted and it is hoped that these modern sports will attract a wider more youthful audience and increased sponsorship.
The official Olympic Committee will now consider the recommendations but we will have to wait until August 2016 before they reveal whether or not surfing has made the cut. There aren’t many sports as exciting and explosive as surfing and it would be a guaranteed favourite with the global audience. At this moment in time, running the event on natural or artificial waves are both viable options, although we would think holding the competition on man made waves (such as the recent Red Bull Unleashed event at Surf Snowdonia) would create an even battleground and would remove the possibility of lacklustre waves and unpredictable waiting periods.
We would to love to hear your thoughts on the inclusion of surfing in the Olympics. Would you rather the event was held in the ocean or a wavepool and who would you want to represent your own nation if surfing does make it into the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo?
