A new and totally unique SUP competition has been announced and will take place underground on Lake St Leonard in Switzerland, beneath the mountains of Velais. This event has been given the name The Bat Race and is for the first time, a stage on the Alpine Lakes Tour.
Registration for The Bat Race opens on the 24th of February and is strictly limited to just 40 riders, who will battle it out on the largest underground lake in Europe, which is 300 metres long and is the habitat of thousands of Bats. The Bat Race will take place on March the 14th 2015 and the 40 competitors will go head to head in sprint races.
Surprisingly the lake isn’t as cold as you may imagine as it maintains a temperature of around 11ºC all year round and whilst the Lake is popular with visiting tourists in the region, Paddleboarding is banned and special dispensation has been granted for The Bat Race to go ahead.
