Today we thought we would have a look at some of the best Apps for Surfers that are available on iTunes and offer some of our personal recommendations. Smart phones and tablets are a part of everyday life and there is no reason why you shouldn’t be using this technology to your advantage and to improve your Surfing experience.
Firstly every Surfer should have a Surf forecasting App on their smart device and one we rate pretty highly is the MagicSeaweed App. Not only does it have global coverage of a lot of the main spots, you can also glean information such as tide times, the type of break it is, the conditions it will work best on and a prediction of the Surf for the week ahead. The App is available as free version or as a pro version for £1.99 and this will give 10 day forecasting as well as wind chill and wind gust data.
Next up and a must for the travelling Surfer is The Stormrider Surf Guide App, which contains a mine of information on nearly 3000 spots around the world. The App is available to buy for a one off fee of £5.49, and from then on you will receive free updates as more regions and spots are added. The Stormrider App is ideal for planning a Surf trip, is easy to use and will work both on and offline.
A new App that has recently been released is called Johnny On The Spot and this clever App lets you record every Surf session as they happen for your own personal reference. If your favourite secret spot has been gangbusters, simply take a snap using Johnny On The Spot and the picture will be overlaid with all the information that made that particular session so special. You will have a record of wind direction and strength as well as the relevant swell information that you can save and diarise for future reference.
One App that is great for Surfers of all levels is the iSurfer – Surfing Coach App and this not only gives you information and tips on how to pull off various manoeuvres and improve your Surfing, it also includes sections on safety, equipment and a personal surf log. The App is available for £0.69 and you get a lot of information for your money.
Finally one last App we feel is well worth considering is Billabong Surf Trip, this is actually a Surf game and great for killing time when travelling on Surf trips or during any flat spells. The Surf simulation game features real Surf spots and real Surfers and allows you to progress to the level of a Pro Surfer with time and dedication. This is one App that we never tire of and keep coming back to hone our skills and try to nail that perfect wave!
There are loads of Apps out there and the numbers are increasing week on week so everybody will have their own preferences as to what they consider to be the best App for a Surfer. Our list is by no means exhaustive so we would love to hear from you if you have an App that you can recommend, why not share it with us and the Surf Report followers?
