So, after days of hype and excitement the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau has been called off, after the predicted swell changed direction, meaning the required 40 foot waves just didn’t show up on the day. For those who are desperate for their fix of big wave surfing, you haven’t got long to wait as it has been announced that the Titans of Mavericks is going ahead this Friday (12th of February) and will stream live via Red Bull TV.
Unlike the Eddie, the Titans of Mavericks organisers don’t set a size benchmark, but instead wait for the promise of ideal conditions and now the call has been made, there should be no reason the event will not go ahead. Right now, the 24 Titan invitees will be dropping everything and making their way across the globe to be at Half Moon Bay on Friday morning. The event will be broadcast live via Red Bull TV here at 4pm GMT (8am PST).
For those desperate to see the 9th Eddie Would Go event run, keep your fingers crossed – the waiting period is open until February 29th and there is currently a glimmer of hope on the horizon with a swell potentially big enough for next week. Whilst we are disappointed The Eddie isn’t currently gracing our screens, we do feel calling the event off and holding out for the 40 foot swell is the right thing to do and maintains the integrity of the competition.
Let us know your thoughts – was calling off the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau the right thing to do and how disappointed are you the organisers announced it would run just 24 hours earlier? Which event would you rather see run, the Titans of Mavericks or the Eddie Would Go?
