Just a fortnight ago we brought you news of the Rollin’ Retro competition at Llandudno in Cape Town, which is held yearly and sees Surfers battle it out on vintage surfboards. Well, it seems as though Llandudno is a magnet for unusual Surf competitions, as this weekend the beach hosts The Nixon Weird Board contest.
Nine of the world’s best shapers are tasked with shaping a unique and “weird” board, that is then given over to be used in contest by 18 competitors. Each competitor then gets to take each board out and tries to ride it to the best of their ability with flamboyance and style.
The design of this years boards are still under wraps and we can’t wait to see what will be unveiled at this years competition, to give you an idea of what to expect, we have included a clip from a previous Nixon Weird Board Contest. There has been a lot of talk this week about the Dick Surfboard, shaped by Paul Fisher, which if you haven’t seen it, a quick Internet search will reveal all. We are hoping the shapers at the Nixon Weird event will be a little more imaginative and subtle!
