We are pleased to be able to report that following an announcement this morning, one of the heaviest surf contests on one of the gnarliest waves on the planet, the Red Bull Cape Fear will return for 2015. The competition is held at Cape Solander in Sydney on what is considered by many as the heaviest slab break in the world, the competitors have to battle it out trading waves that they paddle and tow into.
The waiting period for this unique event is held over four months and opens on May the 5th until August the 1st, with the organisers looking for a swell in excess of 10 feet. Not only does the wave at Cape Fear break over a shallow slab, it is also unloads its raw power just metres from the cliff face and the risks are extremely high for all the competitors.
Local surfer, contest organiser and defending champion Mark Matthews considers Cape Fear as ‘the heaviest and most dangerous wave in the world’ and that comes from someone who thrives on chucking himself into ‘bombs’ on a regular basis! The good news for us mortal surfers is that when the event gets underway we will be able to watch the event live through Red Bull TV!
