In March 2015, New Zealand is set to host what must be the definitive surf competition to determine the best all round waterman in the world. The Ultimate Waterman Challenge is set to be held over 8 consecutive days, commencing March 14th and will see 8 elite participants compete in the disciplines of SUP Surfing, SUP Endurance, tow in surfing, short and longboard surfing and waka-ama (outrigger canoe) endurance.
The competition will head to wherever the conditions favour for each discipline and will be broadcast globally via social media and is expected to be watched by up to 50 million spectators. The Ultimate Waterman competition has the backing of Laird Hamilton who is an official ambassador for the event and who many already consider to be the ultimate waterman.
Five athletes are already confirmed, Manoa Drollet, Kai Lenny, Mark Visser, Daniel Kereopa and Danny Ching and the organisers will shortly announce the remaining three contestants of which two are expected to be female competitors.
Below this article you will find two videos, the first the official launch video, which will give you a feel for this amazing competition and the second a Skype interview with Laird Hamilton revealing what he considers makes the ultimate waterman.
