An interesting video has shown up this week of a Stand Up Paddleboarder using thrust power to cruise across a lake, well, when I say cruise it is claimed he is actually reaching speeds of up to 60 mph! The hand held thrust pack certainly moves the rider along at speed and this is clear to see from the wake caused by the board and the lift of the SUP from the water.
Never has a commute to work, looked so much fun, no more queuing for the Woolwich Ferry or the Staten Island Ferry, just hop on your SUP and you’ll be there in no time! The thrust kit is powered from a rucksack carried by the rider, but in time if the idea is to be followed up, there is no reason why a power pack couldn’t be board mounted.
We have no idea if this is a serious invention, that is under test or available to the masses or if it is just a backyard project for a bit of fun, but apart from the noise of the thing we can see some appeal to this. Sure, it takes away the whole point of the paddling part, but it would be great fun to cruise around a remote piece of coast and to explore on.
We are not sure that 60 mph is really necessary and any impact against the water at that speed would be like hitting tarmac, we are also wondering how easy it is to stop and get off of the board when you reach a mooring point. The video of this near supersonic board in action is below, take a look and let us know what you think of this weird invention.
