With the waiting period for the Titans of Mavericks competition due to close tomorrow (31st of March 2015) it is safe to say that we will not be seeing the big wave event taking place this year, and it will have to roll over to 2016. Although a swell peaking at 17 feet is forecast for the final day, the conditions are not considered anywhere near good enough to call the competition.
The official Titans of Maverick website also explains that ‘The Call’ to competitors will be made 48 hours prior to the event and there is not enough time now to gather the competitors to Half Moon Bay, even if the organisers wanted too. This isn’t the first time the event hasn’t run due to a lack of big waves, the competition was cancelled in 2009, 2011 and 2012.
Previous winners at Mavericks include Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Chris Bertish and the only 3 times winner Darryl “Flea” Virostko. The Titans of Mavericks is respected by surfers the world over and the organisers have to make the right call for it to run in the biggest surf during the waiting period and not on any old wave, just so they can hold the event.
To ease the pain of not seeing the Titans of Maverick run in 2015 we have included the official teaser video below. Do you think the organisers have done the right thing in not calling the event this year or would you like it to go ahead in any size surf?
