Surfing Nazare must be an intimidating experience but imagine on your very first wave you drop in, only to get flattened by a rogue jet ski that happened to bouncing shoreward on the same wave. That is exactly what happened to Tom Lowe who was in Portugal to sample Nazare for the very first time, and he would be forgiven if he decided it was his last time too!
Luckily Tom escaped without serious injury, even after the loose ski took his legs away from him as he rode the whitewater. The ski pilot was Jamie Mitchell, who was forced to bail halfway up the face of the wave that Tom had dropped in on. Tom certainly had someone watching over him on the day and was lucky not to have been knocked unconscious by the ski, the fact that both Tom and the ski where travelling at the same speed in the same direction definitely helped, although Tom’s surfboard didn’t escape ding free.
You can see the incident play out in the video clip below, where you will see just how close Tom came to catastrophe, although he seems pretty relaxed about it all and comments on how the safety down there “is just dialled in!” Would you be so relaxed if a jet ski had nearly flattened you?
