Last weekend, Maui bore witness to the first ever Pe’ahi Challenge, when some of the world’s best big wave surfers gathered at Jaws to compete in the paddle in surf contest. The event was streamed live and tens of thousands of spectators tuned in to watch the competition unfold, but the action at Jaws didn’t stop when the competition ended and Billy Kemper walked away with the trophy. Massive waves continued to unload at Jaws as the week went on and some of the best watermen in the world couldn’t resist the opportunity to don their wetsuits and dig out the paddleboards, tow surfboards, windsurf boards and kite surf gear.
Kai Lenny, Robbie Naish, Jesse Richman and the Porcella brothers all star in the Xensr video below and take it in turns to trade waves on their chosen craft, each of them racing the watery avalanche hot on their tail. The clip is worth watching just to see Kai Lenny getting shacked on his SUP and to witness Robbie Naish gouging chunks out of Jaws on his windsurf board. Feel free to let us know what you think of the impressive skills of these accomplished watermen.
