Ever since the dawn of wave riding Surfers have always had their own unique style of language and to this day nothing has changed. From innocent 60’s phrases such as shooting the curl and packing the Woodie, through to more obscure and not so polite sayings such as Dick Dragger and Yuckbabe. One thing is certain; the language is an important and ingrained part of surfing culture.
For an in-depth guide to the unique language or lingo of Surfer Dudes the world over take a look at the extensive guide that has been published at Rippin H20 here. At the time of writing the list contains 740 words and sayings and include a breakdown of what they actually all mean.
We have also attached two videos to further show the distinctive language used within surfing culture to this day. The first, although a few years old, thoroughly sums up just how a Surfer feels after scoring a great session and we find it hard to watch the clip without smiling, although we cannot guarantee the star of the video was not under the influence of anything at the time of recording!
The second video is a parody of the Surfing lingo and has been filmed by Sanuk as a tongue in cheek takeoff and we promise you won’t be able to watch without either knowing you have said at least one of the sayings before or at the very least heard your kook mates saying them!
So chill out, kick back, don’t be a hodad and check out these gnar gnar videos! Wapaah!
