If you have ever fancied making your own surfboard but have been put off by the idea of sourcing a blank and then trying to perfect the shaping process, you may be interested in a set of cardboard blanks from a company called Westkust. The Dutch company are offering a total of 9 ready to go cardboard blanks to choose from, which not only offer an alternative from traditional eco unfriendly foam but also look like a piece of art. Best of all for those of you with access to a laser cutter all the plan files are available to download for free.
If you don’t have access to a laser cutter but still fancy the idea of a cardboard blank, Westkust can do the work for you and send the 3D cardboard jigsaw out, ready for you to assemble and glass yourself. The cardboard surfboard blanks are the brainchild of Mike Sheldrake, who has created a range of boards including a 5’10” FISH, an 8′ FUN minimal and a cracking looking 9’6″ NAWP longboard. Apparently it takes a couple of hours to build the blank once you have the laser cut pieces on site and they are said to be as strong as Balboa.
If you are trying to keep the costs to a minimum and you like the idea of a challenge the boards can be glassed by yourself, Mike has even posted Youtube videos showing how, or if you are not that confident you can simply take it to your local shaper to finish for you. Check out the full range of cardboard blanks from Westkust here, where you can also place an order or download the files for free. We would love to hear if any of you have already made your own cardboard surfboard or have you simply hung the blank as a conversation piece? If you have access to a laser cutter make sure you get in touch! 😉
