Although it is the most important item of kit for any surfer, the wetsuit can sometimes be a royal pain in the backside to get on and off, especially when the fingers are numb and cold. As a surfer who has spent a lifetime surfing in the English Channel in all weathers and seasons, there have been times when I have been so cold, getting the wetsuit on has been near impossible. A new product called WETSOX, currently seeking funding on Kickstarter could be the answer to end struggling in and out of wetsuits.
The WETSOX is an ultra stretch and frictionless sock that you put on before donning the wetsuit. The result is that putting on or removing the wetsuit, almost becomes effortless as the suit glides quickly and smoothly over the WETSOX. Because the WETSOX makes the wetsuit easier to get on and off, (i.e. without the need to stand on your suit), they also reduce stretching and tearing of your wetsuit. The addition of a split toe in the design also means that there is no slipping or sliding of the WETSOX inside of your normal wet boot.
If you are extremely susceptible to the cold or looking for an extra warming layer, a thicker set of socks are also offered. Known as the HOTSOX, these also provide a frictionless barrier, but with the benefit of a premium fabric blend that provides an added layer of warmth. Both sets of SOX are quick drying and can be used for preventing fin rub when Bodyboarding, they are suitable for all watersports and can even be worn over conventional socks when snowboarding or skiing and make boot removal a whole lot easier.
At the time of writing, the project has received the support of 41 backers and currently raised $2885 of the $15 000 goal, with 35 days to go. You can pledge to support WETSOX with just a single dollar, but for $21 you can get your hands on a pair of WETSOX, or if you fancy a pair of HOTSOX these will be $27. For me though, I like the look of the $15 pledge that will get your Mum a hand written Mothers Day card and you a WETSOX koozie to enjoy!
The WETSOX Kickstarter video can be seen below this article and you can follow the link here to see the official Kickstarter campaign page, where you can also make a pledge. Many people have their own ideas to make putting on wetsuits a little bit easier, such as putting carrier bags over their limbs, but do you think the WETSOX offer a real solution and can you see them being a part of your essential surf kit?
