GoPro must be looking over their shoulder right now, as a Chinese company has just launched a rival action camera that seriously out specs and undercuts the price of the basic GoPro Hero. Xiaomi are a Chinese telecommunications company with aspirations beyond the mobile phone market who have recently launched the Yi Action Camera, for the equivalent of £41 ($64).
For the money, the Yi Action Camera packs some serious credentials, including a 16 megapixel camera with wide angle lens, that captures 1080p HD video at 60 frames per second and has 64GB of onboard storage. Watersport enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the Xiaomi Yi Action Camera is also waterproof to a depth of 40 metres.
Unfortunately at this time there are a couple of drawbacks for surfers and other water users regarding the Yi. Firstly, for the time being Xiamoi are only selling the camera within China, although it is speculated that they are planning an online store and will begin to ship to foreign shores shortly. Secondly, mounts and accessories are extremely limited at this moment in time, with only a selfie stick and a small harness available.
For the money, the Yi certainly looks like a lot of camera and certainly rivals both the GoPro Hero and Polaroid Cube in terms of price, but does the surf market need another waterproof action camera? If the Xiaomi Yi was to go on sale globally, would you consider giving it a go at a price of £41 ($64)?
