In conjunction with the WSL, Samsung have released a short film/advert aimed directly at the surfing community and intended to show how the surfing world is linked together by all who enjoy the sport and no matter how small a part you play in the sport how we all contribute in some way to it’s pure definition. The short clip is entitled ‘We are greater than I’ and it is quite simply one of the finest advertisements we have seen.
Social media has been swamped with arguments that the film is purely a sideways swipe at Apple and has lead to many arguments over who makes the best phones, but I don’t care much for that. I am more interested in the monologue narration, the choice of words and the perfectly matched imagery. The film features the likes of Sally Fitzgibbons, Mick Fanning and Gabriel Medina as well as a ton of ordinary wave lovers, like you and I and for myself covers every aspect of the sport we all relish – warts and all.
The full advert, already viewed by over 60 thousand people, can be seen beneath this article and no doubt you will have your own views on the hidden message and if Samsung are hijacking our sport purely to get one over on Apple? Does the film make you want to buy a phone or get out and get wet? Exactly!
