It was the 2nd of December 2006 when Zachary Golebiowski’s life changed forever, when he was attacked by a great white shark, whilst out surfing with his brother and a friend. Showing remarkable adversity, courage and forgiveness, Zac has since put his life back together and returned to the ocean and to the sport of Bodyboarding.
Zac who was just 15 years old at the time, had just caught a wave and was paddling back out when the shark attacked from out of nowhere, resulting in Zac losing his right leg. Zac was bravely rescued and pulled from the water by his brother, who Zac has no doubt saved his life on the day. Amazingly, Zac bears no malice to the shark who attacked him and simply says “It sucks that I’ve only got one leg now but, at the same time, it’s just an animal, he was only doing what was natural to him. I’ve never supported shark culls either.”
Zac is now 24 years old and after a few dark years after the attack, now embraces life with a passion and appreciates everything he has. In the video below, called The Wrong Year/The Right Year, as he recounts the events of that day and his life ever since, softly spoken Zac tells us that “life is good”, and after watching and listening to this humble young man with such a positive outlook, you can’t help but agree.
Do you think you could ever return to the ocean after a shark attack and would you be a big enough person to forgive a shark that took your leg?
